It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Carolyn Mary (Okray) Sherwood of Warren on November 14, 2024, at age 80. Beloved mother of Eve (David) Kramer and Erica (Brian) Dunn, grandmother of Gabriel and Xavier Dunn, and sister of Leonard (Jacki) Okray. Carolyn was preceded in death by parents George Shudera and Bernice (Stuss) Okray, adoptive father Leonard Okray, and brothers Robert (Peggy) Okray and George (Linda Kriss) Okray.
Carolyn graduated from Corpus Christi Elementary School and St. Stanislaus High School in Detroit. She received her undergraduate degree in Spanish and Education from Wayne State University and a Masters in Secondary Education from the University of Michigan. She taught Spanish for more than 25 years in the Detroit Public Schools.
Carolyn spent many hours volunteering at the Detroit Zoo and the Detroit Institute of Arts. She was a devoted member of the Friends of the Warren Public Library, the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, and St. Mark Parish. She was a talented artist and loved to send handmade cards to family and friends. She loved to read, travel, draw, and spend time with her grandsons. Carolyn was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.
Visitation will take place at Wysocki & Wilk Funeral Home, 29940 Ryan Road in Warren, on Sunday, November 24, from 3 to 7 pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church, 4401 Bart Avenue in Warren, on Monday, November 25, at 10 am. Family and friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30 am. Private interment at Resurrection Cemetery will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the organizations with whom Carolyn volunteered, the American Cancer Society, or St. Mark Parish.
