Charles E. Rassey, a luminary of charm and craftsmanship, departed this world on January 10, 2025, in Royal Oak, Michigan, leaving behind a legacy woven from dedication and abundant laughter. Born on March 31, 1938, in the picturesque Santa Monica, California, Charles was as vibrant as the sun-drenched skies of his hometown.
For a great part of his life, he unfurled his passion in the realms of engineering and machinery. As the proud owner-operator of a machine shop, he blended technical prowess with an artisanal touch, crafting not just machinery, but a space imbued with his indomitable spirit. His devotion to his craft was palpable; the late hours spent perfecting his work and the twinkling eyes closing in satisfaction upon achieving a new feat were testament to a life centered around relentless pursuit.
Academically formidable, Charles held degrees in both mechanical engineering and architectural engineering, a cornerstone that underpinned his ingenious endeavors. It was in the United States Army where his journey was beautifully colored by the serendipitous meeting of Sheila, the love of his life, a bond that would forever intertwine their stories despite her passing.
Charles was a man of many pursuits, embodying the thrill of life in its exhilarating entirety. He reveled in the wind against his face while motorcycling, the waves lapping at his boat, and the sweet challenge of a round of golf. His zest for life shone most brightly in car racing, a passion so fervent that he dived headfirst into constructing cars that would roar down the track, each rev echoing his spirited laughter. He found solace and joy in simpler pleasures too—playing pool with friends, indulging in the captivating worlds of Star Trek and Star Wars, while idolizing icons like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.
A charming man, his favorite greeting was an embodiment of his spirit: "Shake the hand that shook hands with Clark Gable". This phrase wrapped itself around the hearts of those who encountered him, accompanied by robust laughter that would brighten the dullest days. Charles lived life to the fullest, weaving unforgettable memories that will linger in every corner of the lives he touched.
He is survived by his beloved family, including his daughter, Dawn (Charles) Shipley; grandson, Manny Urquilla; niece, Domma Whitlark, who was both caregiver and confidant; along with his cherished nieces and nephew, Aubrielle, Patty, Yvonne, and Ed. Charles goes on to join the family that passed before him including, both of his former wives, Sheila and Faye Rassey; his sister, Barbara; and his niece, Kathy.
While he now journeys beyond, the echoes of his laughter and the warmth of his spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those who loved him. Charles E. Rassey was not merely a man of machines; he was a craftsman of life, building connections and memories that will endure, cherished eternally by his kin and friends. In his passing, we celebrate a life rich in laughter, talent, and love—a life that truly knew no bounds.
